About the Author

Susan McCarty is an associate professor of creative writing at Oakland University, in the metro Detroit area. She is the author of the short-story collection Anatomies (Aforementioned Productions, 2015). Her essays have appeared in Creative Nonfiction,Seneca Review, Ecotone, Zone 3, Western Humanities Review, Iowa Review, Utne Reader, and other journals. She has a BA from Wellesley College, an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, and a PhD from the University of Utah. Originally from Iowa City, she has lived other lives in other states including as a server in Norman Mailer’s local seafood restaurant, an indentured servant on Cape Cod, a book editor, an obituary writer, the copyeditor of a beer magazine, and a professor on Maryland’s mysterious Eastern Shore. She really likes southeastern Michigan and shares her home with the writer Matt Kirkpatrick, their kid, and a dog named Jellybeans.
